Mission Giant
Uncle Buzz
Denton, TX
Since their inception in 1996, Mission Giant has specialized in a quirky, eccentric, bizarre, hi-tech combination of synth-pop and electronic experimentalism. The band was formed in Denton, TX by five musicians who graduated from the University of North Texas with visual arts degrees: Shane Culp, Aaron Graves, Gavin DeCuir, M and Corbett Sparks. From these humble beginnings, they began to craft music with a mix of instruments including vintage synthesizers, children's toys, assorted drum machines, old
exercise records on vinyl, pawn shop Casios, and a Sega Genesis video game system.
One of Mission Giant's major influences is the seminal German group Kraftwerk. They also owe a debt to various new wave and synth-pop stars, including Devo, Gary Numan, the Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby and Human League. But despite having many '70s and '80s influences, Mission Giant is not an exact replica of music from those decades, as they also show an awareness of recent electronic music trends. While some of their material adheres to a conventional song structure, other songs are collages of strange, odd, whimsical electro-noise.
After releasing over 20 recordings on their own label, Fellowshipwreck Music, Mission Giant signed with the independent San Antonio, TX-based Uncle Buzz label. Since then, they've released I Scream Social and Friends of Sound followed by Brotherhood of the Plug in late 2003. And the band continues to impress audiences with a live show that often includes video projections, matching outfits, and an ever-growing list of custom-made, circuit-bent instruments.
