Performance 17 features two former Austin composers: Bill Thompson (now based in the UK) and Holland Hopson (now based in Alabama). With Thompson wielding bent electronics, and Hopson on circuit-tricked banjo, expect the unexpected! In addition to solo sets by both musicians, the two will perform as part of Gates Ensemble – a rare opportunity to hear the original lineup of this Austin outfit. Austin’s own synth wizard Rick Reed opens the show.
The Gates Ensemble is an electro-acoustic ensemble formed in September 2001 to realize the piece “Gates,” for which the ensemble was eventually named. The piece involved free improvisation within the context of strict entrance and exit times. Since its inception, Gates has performed rarely and membership has clustered loosely in Austin. This will be the first time since July 2007 that the group (Thompson, Hopson, plus Travis Weller, Jacob Green, Josh Ronsen, and Brent Fariss) have performed together. With solo sets from the two visiting expat members, and a new version of the original “Gates” piece by Thompson, this performance will be a great opportunity to hear the sounds of Gates, both unified and refracted.
